Fragrance families explained

Researched Updated:

Floral

Rose, jasmine, iris or tuberose take centre stage. Floral scents range from delicate to opulent and are especially common in women’s fragrances.

Fresh: citrus and aquatic

Citrus fruits, mint and marine notes feel light and clean. Fresh scents suit summer and the office well but often last somewhat shorter.

Woody and aromatic

Cedar, sandalwood and herbs give fragrances structure and depth. Woody scents feel polished and can be worn all year.

Oriental and gourmand

Vanilla, tonka, spices and amber provide warmth. Gourmand scents additionally recall edible things such as caramel, coffee or cocoa. They suit autumn, winter and the evening.

Conclusion

Fragrances are roughly grouped into families: floral, fresh (citrus/aquatic), woody, oriental (warm, spicy, sweet), chypre and gourmand.
